Elfen Lied – Chapter 106

If Someday

The choice between life and death… especially when you can’t control either.

Brief Summary

Facing the two personas, they begged Kouta to kill her before any more damage was done. Lucy and Nyuu could only deflect the attacks from hitting other people, but they’re quickly fading away. If they disappear, so will the protection.

Hearing their words sparked a memory of long ago when Lucy made a similar request.

Though refused, Lucy mentioned meeting somewhere… even if Kouta ever forgot about her.

But like in the past, he just couldn’t do it. And in consequence, Lucy and Nyuu were no longer there to protect them.

Covering himself for a fatal blow, it never came. When he looked up, Kouta found Lucy’s third persona holding the handgun out to him… still moaning about the pain. And with the four other girls watching…

Impressions

This chapter redeems Elfen Lied from being just blood, gore, and detached limbs. Without a doubt now, it’s one of the most tragic tales to ever be told. I have to admit, watching the anime version didn’t really amaze me. After the first ten minutes, I got an average impression out of watching that series. However, reading this got a completely different reaction. Though the bloody elements are still there, the plot alternates between Lucy’s Diclonius urges and her past/present/future with Kouta. So much more tugging of the heartstrings.

Being punished for wrongs that weren’t intentional… and living with its consequences. Tormented by being different and treated like a lab animal. Having a slight taste of the real world… only to be snatched away. Reunited with a past love only to beg the same person to kill her. All of this just comes together in this one manga and it definitely exceeds my expectations… and more.

Just one more chapter until the end of Elfen Lied… and despite the tragedy, I expect some sort of anime Tsukihime-like ending involving that special place. Reunited… but only in spirit.
