Watashitachi no Tamura-kun – Chapter 9

The Speed of Escape

Had Tamura already forgotten about his first love?

Brief Summary

Despite his first thoughts, Souma didn’t lead him to her home (pervert!).

It turned out to be a balcony overlooking the city. Souma pointed out her former junior high in the distance and with a melancholic face, expressed relief when she said it’s going to be demolished.

Later that night, he talked with his friend about what happened and got a warning in response. Though denying any special feelings for Souma, Tamura couldn’t get past her sad expression. Only when the other guy mentioned Matsuzawa did he recover his senses.

Proclaiming his love for Matsuzawa, he even went so far as to call himself her “super male cheerleader” (creepy much?). However, his faith was quickly tested…

The next morning, Tamura rode with Souma but there was something amiss. He didn’t get any sleep last night, thinking too much about Matsuzawa. That might be the reason why he acted quirky… which led up to him being abandoned.

At school, Tamura complained about how cruel she was to leave him behind. Souma just ignored the issue and asked for his phone number, which he refused. He even teased her about how she couldn’t call due to her crush on his brother.

Their bantering was interrupted by the entrance of two other girls. They seemed to recognize her and even called her a “chronic ditcher”.

But hearing their voices in her mind… taunting her… just crippled Souma to a crying, helpless mess.

Recognizing that her pain was genuine, he offered her a piggyback ride despite his leg being injured.

Impressions

Wow. Tamura really showed his character in this chapter, ranging from his unchanging feelings for Matsuzawa to being kind and considerate to Souma. Yet, this could be seen as a turning point… or rather, the point of no return. Like the missing charm, Tamura will end up forgetting about Matsuzawa just because they’re so far apart. There have been no letters, no calls… nothing physical to tie them together. For Souma, everything’s working for her since she sees him daily (not to mention her free rides to school).

Following from hints dropped from previous chapters, Souma seemed to have a bad experience in junior high. Judging from her nickname and how she curled up, she might have been physically abused, probably bullied to the point where she stayed at home. Just a guess but that theory seems to be strengthened more and more with each new chapter release.

Woe is me and I’m still rooting for Matsuzawa… :(
