Hoshi no Koe – Chapter 4

Is it really ok?

Brief Summary

While stopping by a convenience store, Noboru spots a magazine about the Tarsian mission. Adding it to his purchases, he’s reminded of Mikako and how it’s been a year since that fateful summer.

While waiting for a train to pass, he receives a message from Mikako. Reading the last words in it, he wonders if everything would be “okay” like she claims.

From that day since, Noboru kept checking his inbox, only to find nothing. As she travels farther and farther way, the time between messages would grow. The only thing that he could do… is wait.

One day, Noboru bumped into an old classmate from middle school. When he asked if the other guy remembered Mikako, the answer was something he didn’t expect. Despite how everyone was jealous of her in the past, people have already forgotten. It just made him feel even more sorry for Mikako.

Instead of joining his friend for the social, Noboru chose to go back to the bus stop where he and Mikako took shelter from the rain. When checking his cell phone one more time, the status was still the same… “No New Messages”.

Thinking about the past, he remembered the day when Mikako started talking about going to Jyohoku.

Noboru never knew… how hard it was to keep their promises. Waiting for her, remembering her… Luxuries taken for granted when Mikako was on Earth. He wonders if he could keep them.

Impressions

NOTE:
Sorry that I used Photobucket to upload these images rather than the built-in WP one. I was having issues with broken links.

This is what makes Hoshi no Koe so great. It’s not the mecha action. It’s not the sappy romance that you see elsewhere. It’s the simple, down-to-Earth (pun intended) situation that the author creates. It’s not uncommon to hear of long distance relationships and this exemplifies that. You have Noboru who felt left behind at first. Now he realizes that Mikako’s the one who’s behind. Adding onto that, Noboru has doubts about whether or not he will remember her since everyone else forgot. Will he end up the same way or will their feelings hold true? Maybe a manly tear or two were shed after reading this chapter. T_T

To be honest, between the two characters, I feel more sympathetic for Noboru. His feelings are tested everyday and unlike Mikako, everything around him keeps moving for the future. The past is left behind as shown by the old classmate. As for members of the Tarsian fleet, everyone’s time is “frozen”. They all left Earth at the same time so they’re in the same time frame.

  1. Why apologize about Photobucket?

Another nice chapter with some very good shots.

  2. Photobucket could get a bit flaky with me at times… :\
