Manga adaptation

How far would you go…? How long would you wait…? All for the one you love…

Brief Summary

The chapter begins with a girl sitting in a cockpit with a cell phone in her hand. She thinks about the world she lives in and how it’s different from before. The days when she was able to talk instantaneously with other people are coming to an end as she travels farther and farther away…

In another place, snow begins to fall, their big white flakes gently tumbling through the air. On the ground below, a boy sits alone, bundled with a scarf. A musical tune plays from his pocket, ending when he answered his cell…

As he read her message, the boy learned about her time on Mars. While she’s training in her unit and visiting famous landmarks on the Red Planet, he remains on Earth, sitting through another boring lesson in school.

Listening to his classmates talk about her seeded his envy as he wishes to trade places with her. Life, on Earth, seems so boring in comparison.

While walking back home, he spots a spaceship taking off. It triggers his memories when he watched another ship rise, the Lysithea. But that time, he was with Mikako and she hadn’t left yet. Noboru was talking with her about the new research mission, wondering if anyone from their town would go…

Passing time, they drew pictures about what the Tarsians looked like, sketching weird octopus-like blobs.

After the rain stopped, the two started their trip back home, sharing Noboru’s bike as Mikako took the back seat. Seeing the contrails in the sky, they stop as they watched the Tracers fly by.

It was then… when Mikako confessed.

Impressions

While it’s not tear-jerking yet, the chapter is filled with emotions. Upon reading this, I can start feeling Noboru’s frustration and Mikako’s desperation. The artwork is a bit off (especially with Mikako)… but there’s only so much that can be retained when converting from anime to manga. Plus, I feel as though this is more of a remembrance chapter so it can only get better from here

Perfection!

Though more detailed than the anime, the manga still isn’t as powerful. But then again, this is only chapter 1.

  1. I like art of this manga :)

Now we just have to wait for your anime review! ;)

  2. I could almost feel Noboru’s frustration after reading this review. A long distant relationship, worse, inter-galatic relationship just seems so hard to maintain. I get the feeling that this series will be packed with emotions throughout and will fill readers with tears at the end of everything. :(

  3. Ironically, this was my first meeting with Shinkai Makoto’s work in any form at all. My local manga localisation company published this with lots of praises on the cover. I was intrigued and bought it on a whim.

Definitely did expand on the half hour movie and made it into what it could be. The supporting characters carry the story well and the themes were better illustrated. The melancholy was keenly felt and very visible throughout. A comic well-done indeed.

The anime review will take quite a bit longer… but since I had the manga, I figured that I could review this first.

It’s not only that… The two aren’t officially boyfriend-girlfriend at the start (contrary to the description on the back cover). Unlike the anime, it really gets in-depth with Noboru’s side… most notably, a girl in high school who confessed to him. But… that will be for later :)

The anime was my first exposure to Makoto Shinkai… then pursuing my new-found interest, I discovered this. While there are good/bad points to the anime and manga, there’s one thing that the manga could never overcome… and that is Tenmon’s amazing composition. It turned what was a great anime… to my favorite…
